How Mesa Bulk Pickup Works

Mesa provides monthly bulk trash pickup to single-family residential customers. The city divides itself into districts, and each district has a designated week each month when bulk items are collected. Unlike Phoenix's twice-yearly service, Mesa's monthly frequency gives residents much more flexibility to dispose of large items when they need to.

Service is automatic β€” you do not need to schedule or call ahead. Set your eligible items at the curb by 6:00 AM on the first day of your designated pickup week, and crews will collect them during that week.

Find Your District

Look up your Mesa bulk pickup week at mesaaz.gov/bulkyitems β€” enter your address to see your assigned district and next scheduled pickup week. Mesa also offers an automated reminder service by email or text β€” sign up through the same portal.

Set-Out Rules

  • Items must be at the curb by 6:00 AM on the first Monday of your pickup week
  • Set out no earlier than the Saturday before your pickup week begins
  • Place items within 4 feet of the curb, not in the street
  • Do not block sidewalks, fire hydrants, utility meters, or drainage grates
  • Keep items at least 10 feet from any parked vehicle
  • Do not bag items β€” bulk items should be placed loose at the curb
  • Branches and vegetation must be bundled and tied separately from other items

Mattress Policy: Mesa vs. Phoenix

Unlike Phoenix, which bans all mattresses entirely, Mesa accepts mattresses wrapped in sealed plastic mattress bags. These bags are available at moving supply stores, U-Haul locations, and on Amazon for about $8–$12 per bag. If you don't have a bag, the driver will likely leave the mattress β€” make sure it's fully sealed before your pickup week.

Mesa Bulk Trash FAQ

  • Yes β€” Mesa's monthly program allows you to set out eligible items each month during your district's designated week. There's no limit on how many months in a row you use the service, though there are per-pickup volume guidelines. If you regularly have large amounts, contact Mesa Solid Waste about whether a special arrangement is possible.

  • Yes β€” Mesa's mattress policy is condition-neutral as long as it's sealed in a plastic mattress bag. The bag requirement exists primarily to prevent bedbug spread, so even a worn or stained mattress is accepted if it's fully enclosed. Make sure the bag has no tears and is sealed at both ends.

  • Mesa does not operate its own permanent e-waste drop-off site, but Maricopa County holds quarterly Household Hazardous Waste collection events that accept electronics at no charge for county residents. Mesa is in Maricopa County. Check maricopa.gov/hazwaste for dates and locations. Best Buy locations in Mesa accept electronics year-round.
